TEF Canada Speaking Section A (Guide + Sample Responses)
October 6, 2026
The TEF Canada Expression Orale Section A tests your ability to obtain information. You are given a short advertisement (like a classified ad, poster, or brochure snippet) and you must make a formal phone call to ask 10 to 12 questions about the service or product. The examiner plays the role of the person answering the phone.
In this post, we will walk you through a sample topic from our platform, provide strategy tips, and show you two different levels of questioning: one scoring NCLC 5 (CLB 5) and one scoring NCLC 7 (CLB 7+).
The Sample Topic
Here is a typical TEF Speaking Section A prompt. You would see this advertisement and have 1 minute to prepare your questions before the 5-minute roleplay begins.

(Translation: ADVERTISEMENT: "Form'Attitude" - New fitness center downtown. Special opening offers, group classes, personal coaching, spa area. You are interested. Ask about ten questions: rates, schedules, equipment, discounts.)
How to Answer Section A
To score well on this section, keep these key points in mind:
- The Greeting & Introduction: Start professionally. Introduce yourself, state the purpose of your call, and mention where you saw the ad.
- Formal Register (Le Vouvoiement): You must absolutely use vous. Using tu will severely penalize your score.
- Quantity: Aim for 10 to 12 distinct questions. If you ask fewer than 10, your score will be reduced.
- Variety of Question Structures: Do not just use "Est-ce que..." over and over. Use inversion (Avez-vous...), question words (Comment, Combien, Où), and indirect questions (Pourriez-vous me dire si...).
- The Closing: Thank the person politely and say goodbye properly.
Sample Questions: NCLC 5 (Intermediate)
This level meets the minimum requirements. The candidate uses vous, but the questions are very simple and repetitive.
Greeting: Bonjour monsieur.
Why this is a CLB 5:
- Grammar: The questions are correct but lack variety. Almost all questions start with "Est-ce que".
- Vocabulary: Uses basic, everyday vocabulary without much elaboration.
- Interaction: The candidate asks the questions directly like a checklist without reacting much to the examiner's answers.
Sample Questions: NCLC 7+ (Advanced)
This level demonstrates advanced mastery. The candidate uses polite, indirect question forms, varied grammar structures (inversions, conditionals), and reacts naturally to the examiner.
Greeting: Bonjour monsieur.
Why this is a CLB 7+:
- Grammar: Excellent use of complex structures like indirect questions (savoir s'il serait possible, sauriez-vous m'indiquer), inversion (disposez-vous), and conditional mood for politeness (pourriez-vous, auriez-vous).
- Vocabulary: Rich vocabulary (précisions, forfaits annuels, dernière génération, supplément, envisageable).
- Flow: The questions are linked with excellent transition words (Tout d'abord, Concernant, Au sujet de, Enfin), making it sound like a natural conversation rather than an interrogation.
