TEF Canada Speaking Section B (Guide + Sample Responses)

October 6, 2026

The TEF Canada Expression Orale Section B tests your ability to present a document and persuade a friend. You are given a short document (like an advertisement, article snippet, or brochure) about an activity or service. You must present the idea to a friend (played by the examiner) and try to convince them to participate with you. The roleplay lasts 10 minutes.

In this post, we will walk you through a sample topic from our platform, provide strategy tips, and show you two different levels of argumentation: one scoring NCLC 5 (CLB 5) and one scoring NCLC 7 (CLB 7+).

The Sample Topic

Here is a typical TEF Speaking Section B prompt. You would see this document and have 1 minute to prepare your arguments before the 10-minute roleplay begins.

(Translation: TOPIC: You saw an ad for a carpooling platform for commuting to work. You think it's a great idea, but your friend prefers to drive alone to be independent. You must convince them to try carpooling with you.)

How to Answer Section B

To score well on this section, keep these key points in mind:

  1. Informal Register (Le Tutoiement): You are speaking to a friend. You must absolutely use tu. Using vous will severely penalize your score.
  2. The Introduction: Start by greeting your friend informally ("Salut, ça va ?"). Then, naturally introduce the document you found ("Je viens de lire un truc super intéressant...").
  3. Persuasion & Rebuttal: The examiner will push back and give excuses. Do not give up! Listen to their objections and counter them with strong, logical arguments.
  4. Variety of Arguments: Prepare at least 4 or 5 different angles to persuade them (e.g., financial, ecological, social, time-saving).

Sample Arguments: NCLC 5 (Intermediate)

This level meets the minimum requirements. The candidate uses tu and presents the idea, but the arguments are basic and sometimes struggle to counter the examiner's objections effectively.

Greeting & Introduction: Salut !

Why this is a CLB 5:

  • Grammar: Sentences are generally correct but simple ("C'est moins cher", "C'est bon pour la nature").
  • Vocabulary: Uses basic vocabulary (argent, voiture, nature) instead of more precise terms (frais, véhicule, environnement).
  • Persuasion: The arguments are valid but lack depth. The rebuttal to the music objection is weak.

Sample Arguments: NCLC 7+ (Advanced)

This level demonstrates advanced mastery. The candidate naturally integrates the document, uses idiomatic expressions, handles objections smoothly with complex sentences, and maintains a highly natural conversational flow.

Greeting & Introduction: Coucou !

On pourrait s'arranger facilement.

Argument 3 (Ecological & Rest): Candidate: Sans compter l'impact écologique, on réduirait considérablement notre empreinte carbone.

Why this is a CLB 7+:

  • Grammar: Uses complex structures like conditional (on pourrait économiser, ça te permettrait), and advanced clauses (En étant deux...).
  • Persuasion: Excellent handling of objections. The candidate validates the friend's concern ("Je te comprends tout à fait, mais...") and offers a practical compromise.
