TEF Canada Writing Section A (Guide + Sample Responses)

October 6, 2026

The TEF Canada Expression Écrite Section A requires you to complete a "Fait Divers" (a short news item or unusual story). You are provided with the beginning of a newspaper article and must write the continuation of the story in about 80 words.

In this post, we will walk you through a sample topic from our platform, provide strategy tips, and show you two sample answers: one scoring NCLC 5 (CLB 5) and one scoring NCLC 7 (CLB 7+).

The Sample Topic

Here is a typical TEF Section A prompt:

Vous lisez dans un journal : « Un cambrioleur s'est retrouvé bloqué toute la nuit dans un 'Escape Game' qu'il essayait de dévaliser. » Écrivez la suite de l'article pour raconter comment il a été découvert au matin et sa réaction face à la police.

(Translation: You read in a newspaper: "A burglar found himself locked all night in an 'Escape Game' he was trying to rob." Write the rest of the article telling how he was discovered in the morning and his reaction to the police.)

How to Answer Section A

To score well on this section, keep these key points in mind:

  1. Word Count: Aim for approximately 80-100 words. Do not write too little, or your score will be severely capped.
  2. Chronology: The story must logically follow the prompt. Tell the reader what happened next.
  3. Tenses: This is the most crucial part! You must correctly alternate between the passé composé (for completed actions) and the imparfait (for descriptions, background info, or ongoing actions in the past).
  4. Vocabulary: Use sequencing words (ensuite, soudain, finalement) to structure your narrative.

Sample Answer 1: NCLC 5 (Intermediate)

This answer meets the minimum requirements but contains basic sentence structures and simple vocabulary.

Why this is a CLB 5:

  • Grammar: The tenses are mostly correct, but the structures are very simple ("Il a vu...", "Il était...").
  • Vocabulary: Uses basic vocabulary without much variety or idiomatic expression.
  • Coherence: The story makes sense and follows the prompt perfectly.

Sample Answer 2: NCLC 7+ (Advanced)

This answer demonstrates advanced mastery of the French language, using complex structures, sophisticated vocabulary, and perfect tense usage.

Why this is a CLB 7+:

  • Grammar: Uses complex clauses ("lorsque le gérant...", "ayant désespérément cherché..."). Perfect mastery of plus-que-parfait ("il avait fini par").
  • Vocabulary: Rich and varied journalistic vocabulary (gérant, établissement, malfaiteur, forces de l'ordre, garde à vue).
  • Coherence: Excellent flow with sophisticated connectors (En effet, Dès l'arrivée).
